Macro detail of a black dial with gold hands and stone-set hour markers

Makkah al-Mukarramah · Est. 2009

Time, turned toward the Kaaba.

The first Saudi watch factory. The only watch in the world whose hands follow the Tawaf.

Scroll

Anticlockwise, as the Tawaf turns

The only watch that turns toward the Kaaba.

Every other watch on earth turns right. Ours turns left — following the direction of the Tawaf, the circling of the pilgrims around the Holy Kaaba. It is the direction the planets travel, the direction the winds turn, the direction the electrons run. Time, read the way Makkah reads it.

The Tawaf dial

The numerals ascend anticlockwise, in Al-Khwarizmi figures. Nine sits where every other watch puts three.

The Geometry

A cosmic and philosophical concept, based on the orderly movement of the universe.

The pattern is constructed live, from the same twelve divisions that govern the dial: circles struck upon circles, a twelvefold star, and the spokes that carry the hours. It turns as the watch turns — to the left, and without end.

The Collection

Four pieces. One direction.

Each watch carries the stone, the geometry, or the colour of a sacred place — and every one of them runs anticlockwise.
