Makkah al-Mukarramah · Est. 2009

Time, turned
toward the Kaaba.

The first Saudi watch factory. The only watch in the world whose hands follow the Tawaf.

Hour 11

Anticlockwise, as the Tawaf turns

The only watch that turns toward the Kaaba.

Every other watch on earth turns right. Ours turns left — following the direction of the Tawaf, the circling of the pilgrims around the Holy Kaaba. It is the direction the planets travel, the direction the winds turn, the direction the electrons run. Time, read the way Makkah reads it.

“And in it are clear signs — the Station of Abraham.”

Qur'an 3:97

Read the dial

Twelve at the top.
Then eleven, to its right.

  3. ١٠
  4. ٩
  5. ٨
  6. ٧

Nine sits where a conventional watch puts three; three sits where it puts nine. The figures are Al-Khwarizmi's, cut in relief, and the hour markers are stone taken from Makkah. Look once and it is a beautiful dial. Look twice and it is running the other way.
